Yo What is Up P*ssy's!

If you have been lifting for a while, you have come across Brandon aka. Soosh aka. Sooshbrah. Soosh is a famous Instagram fitness influencer (find his social below). He started out by posting content on TikTok, a mixture of fitness and humor. This went viral, giving way to 100k+ followers across Instagram, and YouTube.

Why I like Soosh

Soosh's content is great, especially his fun and chilled-out perspective on lifting, and not taking things too seriously. If you have been following him for a while (like me), you also may have noticed a change in maturity. Soosh used to start his videos with "Yo What is Up P*ssy's!." Needless to say, this became sort of a catchphrase for him. But, if you watch some of his content now, you can see he has grown out of it. So much so that he himself cringes when watching old videos.

All this is great, but you might be wondering how this relates to his tips for the gym for "not being that guy."

How I Found the Video

I was watching his vlogs (a common practice I do between the time I take pre-workout and getting ready to hit the gym). Then, a video popped up in my feed, titled "Don't be THAT guy in the gym". Given the title, I was curious to find out what it was about. The video was about gym etiquette and Soosh's perspective on it. To save you the time of watching the video, I went ahead and listed these out for you -

Soosh's 10 (more or less) Tips To Not Be That Guy

1. Don't Chew Gum in the Gym

This is not only not safe, but you also look like a b*tch., according to Soosh. If your breath smells bad, brush your teeth beforehand.

2. Don't be the Dad Who Brings Their Son In (But The Son Doesn't Want to be there)

Working out should be an organic experience, and shouldn't be something forced. However, if you are a dad and son working out together, that is still pretty awesome (as long as both are having fun).

3. Don't Train Calve's on a Leg Press

If it's an empty gym, sure go ahead, but if it is a packed gym, please don't do this. Use a smith machine instead. According to Soosh, these are the same guys who load up the leg press with tons of plates, do half reps, then don't re-rack their weights.

4. How to Work-In

If it's a packed gym, absolutely love to work in, but don't be the guy who will switch up the machine (change weights too often/change the height). If you are the guy who asked to work in, always put the pin in the place it was before you changed the weight. It's common courtesy, plus shows respect.

5. Don't Train with the Hood Up

Don't put your hood up, you're not "Robinhood." You can though if you are Kai Greene.

6. Don't Be a Gallon Boy

Don't carry around a gallon container, just get a water bottle. Most gyms have a water refill station. You are exempted though if your gym doesn't have a refill station.

7. Don't Approach the Rocket With Her Hat Down

If there is an "absolute rocket" at the gym, with her - Hat Up, Hair Tied, and Headphones on (and you probably can't see her eyes), she is there for training. Don't approach her/try to talk to her.

Ps. If you don't know what a 'rocket' is, I'll be doing a post explaining common gym terms, so look out for that.

8. Don't Be Embarrassed to Make Faces while Training

This one is especially for beginners - it's okay to make a face. We're all in the gym for the same reason. Everyone is focused on their own thing, nobody cares what face you are making.

9. Don't Be the Old Head Who Gets Mad for Slamming Weights

The gym is not a library.

10. Don't Be The Guy Telling People To Put on A Shirt

Unless the gym has a 'no shirt policy', don't tell people to put back their shirt on. It is only natural to take some pictures after your pump for the gram.

11. Don't Be Dappin' Up People in the Gym

Do the knucks or the elbow? Especially after covid, some might find this unsanitary.

12. Don't Take Laps in the Gym

Don't start walking around the gym after each set. Go check yourself out in the mirror instead.

13. Asking for a Spot The Right Way

Don't ask for a spot and then do 25 rep sets. Spots are meant for PRs or assistance on the weight that you can't do for more than 4 reps.

What I Think

While some of these tips are a bit extreme, I do agree on things like not nagging people for slamming weight. Like c'mon, if I am deadlifting, I want to slam the weight. It looks cool, makes me feel amazing, and most important of all, I can exert my dominance in the gym (LoL). In the end, though, Soosh signs off by saying the following -

Wear what you want, do what you want, train how you want, everyone is in the gym for the same thing. And if you are bigger than me, these tips don't apply to you. This is for entertainment purposes only.

This again highlights his fun, non-grave approach to life. And I agree with this 100%. Yes, you are in the gym to make gains, and yes you are supposed to be serious while lifting heavy weights. But, once all that is done, it is okay to smile, it is okay to have fun. It won't kill your gains.
